A Guide for Beginners.
- Leave your dictionary at home.
- You will have more fun if you don’t spend time looking up words. Just ask: we will be happy to translate.
- Make mistakes.
- Use bad grammar, mispronounce words, have fun! This is your chance to learn, and we will all have a laugh together.
- Use the words you know.
- If you don’t know how to say what you want to say, say something else. Practice using the vocabulary you have already learned.
- Use English words if you need to.
- In Esperanto this is called Krokodili (to crocodile). Say the words in Esperanto that you know, then insert the English words for the rest of it. It will be a great opportunity for folks at the meeting to practice translating.
- Most importantly: Participate in the conversation.
- If you don’t understand, say so. We don’t have a lot of opportunities to speak Esperanto, so take advantage of us.
